As populations age in countries like Japan, Singapore, and parts of Europe, more senior citizens are staying in the workforce. Whether it’s by choice or due to economic factors, older employees bring experience and valuable insights. But let’s face it—traditional software can be intimidating for them. It’s full of complex menus and technical jargon. Not if your ERP (or others) could talk!

At the end of this article is a simple demo showing how this works. With it, you can literally converse with an AI Agent to create a sales invoice or handle other ERP tasks.

This could be a game-changer, especially for businesses with older employees:

1. Making Complex Tasks Easy

This simple approach allows employees to interact with the ERP by simply talking to it. For example, instead of clicking through screens, they can just say, “Hi there! Could you help me create a sales order for Customer ABC” or “I need to take a look at last month’s sales report. Could you pull that up for me?”

The AI agent can also ask further questions to clarify your requests, or to gather sufficient input before it executes the necessary actions. Quite neat!

This makes it so much easier for older employees who might not be as comfortable with computers to get their work done quickly. In fact, since it’s Voice-over-IP, they could just call the Agent using their mobile phones. They don’t even need to turn the computer on.

2. Boosting Efficiency, Hands-Free

Now, here’s where I think it could get even more interesting, too. In places like warehouses or shop floors where employees are often multitasking, being able to converse with the ERP or SCM while moving around  is a huge time-saver. Older workers can stay productive without having to stop what they’re doing to type or click around, making it easier for them to work efficiently even if they have physical limitations.

3. Reducing the Learning Curve

Let’s be honest—nobody likes struggling with new software, especially older employees who may not be as tech-savvy.

When your ERP/SCM can converse naturally, users can just ask the system to do things in plain language. No more memorizing complicated steps or getting lost in menus. This makes onboarding smoother and helps businesses keep experienced workers in the game longer.

Demo

Tech:

  • Handling natural conversation: Voice over IP.
  • Realtime agent response: OpenAI API.
  • Management software: ERPNext.

Note:

  • There’s a minor cut-off in one of the Agent’s response. It basically didn’t finish the sentence (“Just…”). This is probably due to a network connectivity issue.
  • Apologies for the quality of the video resolution. We’ll work on it in our next demo.

The Bottom Line

“Converse-able” ERP systems are friendlier and more accessible, helping businesses tap into the experience of older employees. It’s a simple yet powerful way to keep them engaged and productive. You may also consider a less complex approach in this concept article.

Let’s make technology work for people, not the other way around!
